Christmas in Virginia

We spent Christmas this year in Virginia. It was a whirlwind of a trip, but a wonderful holiday with family and great memories!

Our trip to Virginia was one of our easier ones. Samuel slept most of the way (of course, he hadn't slept the night before...thanks teeth!). We made a few stops along the way for lunch, light shopping and to give Samuel some "driving time." Samuel LOVES to sit on Eric's lap while we are in parking lots and pretend to drive...he loves to see what all the knobs and switches do. Especially the wipers! He'll be a pro in no time...who says you have to be 16 to drive!

We spent Thursday visiting with my parents. We helped decorate the Christmas tree, and Samuel began his 72 hours of clinging to me and screaming when I left his sight...*sigh* it was one of THOSE weekends for him. He did warm up to everyone though, and became especially fascinated with the cats and standing at the glass doors and watching the dogs play outside.

On Christmas Eve we had a yummy family dinner at my sister's and brother-in-laws house in Radford. It was delicious and fun! Samuel LOVED their foster dog, Hope and only broke one Christmas ornament.

We got back to my parents house in time to take a bath and get ready for Santa. He looked so cute in his Christmas Sponge Bob pajamas (Thanks Chrissy!!) We read The Night Before Christmas by the fireplace...and then waited for Samuel to fall asleep...and waited, and waited, and waited. I guess he was just very excited by the Santa prospect. So we played the piano and took pictures of Samuel instead. He eventually gave into sleep...at 10pm WAY past his bedtime!

Up early the next morning, and Santa did indeed visit! Even more amazing, we had a beautiful white Christmas, which is rare for Virginia. Eric and I made a tasty Christmas brunch of french toast casserole, fruit salad and bacon. We then made our way to opening gifts...except Samuel who HATED the idea of gifts, opening anything, playing, or really leaving my side at all. Once again...THANK YOU TEETHING!

We spent the rest of the day watching the snow fall, enjoying a delicious Christmas lunch, and convincing Samuel that he did not indeed need to hang on to me for dear life. We also visited my grandparents, Samuel enjoyed playing with a storage bag and a decorative fly swatter. He wanted little to do with anyone else.

We left on Sunday morning, in midst of a snow storm! But Eric had to get back to work, and we had to get back to doing things that 1-year old like to do! Samuel was excellent on the way back to Maryland where we had MORE gifts to open!

Eric and I decided that we would only have 1 gift from Santa and 3 gifts from us for Samuel to represent the gifts the wise men brought for Jesus. It is really a simple idea, but good for the wallet and doesn't overshadow the meaning of Christmas. Samuel got some pretty great stuff like a wagon and huge bag of Mega Bloks, a puzzle, magnets, and a CD. Samuel got a great gift from his grandpa and granny B, a college fund. Of course, the best gift was being able to be together for the holidays with my family. It was hard with Samuel being so clingy, not sleeping, and crying a lot...but it really was a perfect Christmas!
